Age
of Unreason
Newton's
Cannon (2nd Review)
Sir Isaac Newton's
dabbling in alchemy sparks war
between England and France for control of a vast magical power - and
unites Newton and Benjamin Franklin in a battle against otherworldly
evil.
A Calculus of Angels
1722:
A second Dark Age looms. An asteroid has
devastated the Earth, called down by dire creatures who plot against
the world of men. The brilliant - some say mad - Isaac Newton has taken
refuge in ancient Prague. There, with his young apprentice Ben
Franklin, he plumbs the secrets of the aetheric beings who have so
nearly destroyed humanity.
But
their safety is tenuous. Peter the Great marches his unstoppable
forces across Europe. And half a world away, Cotton Mather and
Blackbeard the pirate assemble a party of colonial luminaries to cross
the Atlantic and discover what has befallen the Old World. With them
sails Red Shoes, a Choctaw shaman whose mysterious connections to the
invisible world warn him that they are all moving toward a
confrontation as violent as it is decisive...
Empire of Unreason
Scientists
and statesmen, philosophers, monarchs,
and sorcerers share the stage as the mortal world is menaced by a race
of supernatural beings, in J. Gregory Keyes increasingly fantastic epic
of alchemy and intrigue in seventeenth-century America and Europe.
Climatic changes produced by the asteroid that devastated Europe have
left the northern American colonies in the grip of an ice age. In the
south, Benjamin Franklin and other survivors and refugees of the
European Armageddon eke out a precarious existence. But the malevolent
creatures known as the Malakim oppose any who challenge their
plans-especially the likes of Franklin and his allies. If they succeed
in destroying the American
colonies,
nothing will deter the Malakim from their ultimate goal: the extinction
of the human race.
The Shadows of God
The
forces of Russia lay to waste the New World,
and English troops make landfall, determined to reconquer the colonies.
Trapped in between lies a motley crew who must save humanity.
Kingdoms
of Thorne and Bone
The Briar King
(2nd Review)
In
the kingdom of Crotheny, two young girls play
in the tangled gardens of the sacred city of the dead. Fleeing an
imaginary attacker, the girls–one of whom is the reckless young
daughter of the king – discover the unknown crypt of the legendary,
ancestral queen, Virgenya Dare.
In
the wilds of the forest, while investigating the slaughter of an
innocent family, king’s holter Aspar White weaves his way through a
maze of ancient willows – and comes face-to-face with a monstrous beast
found only in folk tales and nightmares. Meanwhile, traveling the same
road, a scholarly young priest begins an education in the nature of
evil, found festering just beneath the surface of the seemingly
peaceful land.
The
royal family itself comes under siege, facing betrayal that only
sorcery could accomplish. Now – for three beautiful sisters, for a
young man made suddenly into a knight, and for a woman in love with a
roguish adventurer – a rising darkness appears, shattering what was
once certain, familiar, and good. These destinies and more will be
linked when malevolent forces walk the land. For Crotheny, the most
powerful nation in the world, is shaken at its core. And the Briar
King, harbinger of death, has awakened from his slumber.
The Charnel Prince
Events
in Crotheny have taken a dark turn. The
primeval force of nature called the Briar King is waking and taking
back the land. Other ancient forces are also astir, and terrible
creatures roam the countryside, devouring all that crosses their path
and driving entire villages mad. Queen Murielle's hold on the crown
fails as rival houses and a deeply corrupted church conspire to topple
her or kill her with her husband and children. Prophecies say that a
Dare queen must rule when the Briar King fully awakens or the world
will come to a bloody end. And, in fact, war threatens as political
tensions rise and fear pervades the land. Moreover, Anne Dare,
Murielle's youngest daughter and the true heir to the throne, is
missing, and the hope of finding her alive and well grows dimmer with
each passing day. The excellent sequel to The Briar King continues to
deliver impressive magical creatures, nonstop thrills, and engaging,
believable characters. There will be more.
The Blood Knight
A
season of darkness and horror has fallen upon
the Kingdom of Crotheny. Now countless breeds of unspeakable monsters
roam the countryside. After her husband's murder, Queen Muriele finds
herself at the mercy of Robert Dare who plans a strategic marriage for
his hostage to secure his own power in Crotheny. Muriele's fiancee is
Berimund Reiksbaurg, heir to the throne of Hansa and descendant of the
legendary Blood Knight, who once drank the blood of a worm to gain the
beast's power. But will Dare's plans really work out even? Meanwhile,
Princess Anne awakes from a deep, trancelike sleep after a bloodthirsty
battle with the monsters the Briar King has unleashed. Her guardian Sir
Neil MeqVren and their escort are nowhere to be seen and Anne embarks
on a perilous journey desperate to track down her travel companions.
The Born Queen
The
Briar King is dead, and the world itself follows him to ruin. Aspar
White, wounded and tired, must embark on one last quest to save the
forest and the people he loves, but he has little hope of success.
Anne
Dare at last sits on the throne of Crotheny, but for how long? The
Church, now led by the corrupt and powerful March Hespero, has
declared a holy war against her, giving the king of Hansa the pretext
he needs to unleash his vast might on the young queen and her unready
army.
But
Hansa is the least of Anne's worries. The Hellrune, war seer of
Hansa, strikes at her through vision and prophecy. The Kept'last of
the elder Skasloi lords'weaves his own dark webs. Anne's teacher and
ally in the sedos world might also be her worst enemy, and Anne's own
mounting strength compels her toward madness.
Surviving
these dangers and mastering her eldritch abilities are merely
prelude to the real struggle. There are many'some with power matching
or even exceeding Anne's own'who are willing to kill in order to seize
control. For whoever sits upon the throne will have the ultimate
command to bring about the world's salvation'or its apocalypse.
