Stephen R Donaldson

Stephen Reeder Donaldson was born in 1947 in Cleveland, Ohio. From the age of three until he was sixteen he lived in India, where his father, an orthopedic surgeon, worked extensively with lepers. It was after hearing one of his father's speeches on the subject of leprosy that he conceived the character of Thomas Covenant. He graduated from the College of Wooster, Ohio, and attended Kent State University, where he received an M.A. in English. He now lives in New Mexico.

His first epic fantasy trilogy, The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, the Unbeliever, was published in 1977 and rapidly became a classic, establishing Stephen Donaldson as one of the most important figures in modern fantasy. It was named Best Novel of the Year by the British Fantasy Society, and earned the author the John W. Campbell Award as best new writer. In 1980 his success continued with the publication of the first volume in this equally popular second trilogy - The Second Chronicles of Thomas Covenant. His other work includes a collection of short stories, Daughter of Regals, the two books in the bestselling Mordant's Need series, The Mirror of Her Dreams and A Man Rides Trough, and Strange Dreams, a personal selection of favorite fantasy short stories.

Terisa is drawn into the kingdom of Mordant through her mirror. She discovers a land of magic and intrigue where every clique vies for control of the kingdom.
A Man Rides Through
Aided by the powerful magic of Vagel, the evil Arch-Imager, the merciless armies are marching against the kingdom of Mordant. In its hour of greatest need, two unlikely champions emerge. One is Geraden, whose inability to master the simplest skills of Imagery has made him a laughingstock. The other is Terisa Morgan, transferred to Mordant from a Manhattan apartment by Geraden's faulty magic. Together, Geraden and Terisa discover undreamed-of talents within themselves--talents that make them more than a match for any Imager . . . including Vagel himself.
Unfortunately, those talents also mark them for death. Branded as traitors, they are forced to flee the castle for their lives. Now, all but defenseless in a war-torn countryside ravaged by the vilest horrors Imagery can spawn, Geraden and Terisa must put aside past failures and find the courage to embrace their powers--and their love--before Vagel can spring his final trap.

The Gap into Conflict:  The Real Story

Angus Thermopyle was an ore pirate and a murderer; even the most disreputable asteroid pilots of Delta Sector stayed out of his way.  Those who didn’t ended up in the lockup – or dead.  But when Thermopyle arrived at Mallorys Bar & Sleep with a gorgeous woman by his side the regulars had to take notice.  Her name was Morn Hyland, and she had been a police officer – until she met up with Thermopyle.
But one person in Mallorys Bar wasn’t intimidated.  Nick Succorso had his own reputation as a bold pirate and he had a sleek frigate fitted for deep space.  Everyone knew that Thermopyle and Succorso were on a collision course.  What nobody expected was how quickly it would all be over – or how devastating the victory would be.  It was a common enough example of rivalry and revenge – or so everyone thought.  The real story was something entirely different . . .

The Gap into Vision:  Forbidden Knowledge

Beautiful, brilliant, and dangerous, Morn Hyland is an ex-police officer for the United Mining Companies – and the target of two ruthless, powerful men.  One is the charismatic ore-pirate Nick Succorso, who sees Morn as booty wrested from his vicious rival, Angus Thermopyle. Thermopyle once made the mistake of underestimating Morn and now he’s about to pay the ultimate price.  Both men think they can possess her, but Morn is no one’s trophy – and no one’s pawn.
Meanwhile, within the borders of Forbidden Space, wait the Amnion, an alien race capable of horrific atrocities.  The Amnion want something unspeakable from humanity – and they will go to unthinkable lengths to get it.

The Gap into Power:  A Hungry God Arises

The stage is set for confrontation at Billingate – illegal shipyard, haven for pirates and brigands, where every vice flourishes and every appetite can be sated.  Gateway to the alien realm of the Amnion, the shipyard is a clearinghouse for all they require to fulfill their mutagenic plans against humanity.

It is here that the fate of Morn Hyland is to be decided amid a kaleidoscopic whirl of plot and counterplot, treachery and betrayal.

As schemes unravel to reveal yet deeper designs, Morn, Nick, and Angus’ lives may all be forfeit as pawns in the titanic game  played out between Warden Dios, dedicated director of the UMC Police, and the Dragon, greed-driven ruler of the UMC.  Here the future of mankind hangs on the uncertain fortune of Morn Hyland . . .

The Gap into Maddness:  Chaos & Order

They are a handful of fugitives from an outlaw world, old enemies trapped on a renegade spaceship in a desperate bit for survival.  Among the unlikely crew of the Trumpet are Morn Hyland, once a UMCP cop, now a prisoner of the electrodes planted in her brain; her son, Davies, “force grown” to adulthood by the alien, Amnion; the amoral space buccaneer Nick Succorso; and the unstoppable cyborg Angus Thermopyle.  Locked in a lethal battle for control of the ship, they are also the target of the police ship Punisher.   But Punisher’s human captain is torn between duty and sympathy.  She’s been ordered to kill everyone aboard Trumpet – everyone except for the one whose blood carries the key to the ultimate alien triumph: the ability to appear perfectly human

The Gap into Ruin:  This Day all Gods Die

Drifting in space, sabotaged by a crewman tainted with an alien mutagen, the starship Trumpet broadcasts to any ship in range the formula of the mutagen’s antidote – a drug the United Mining Companies has suppressed for its own sinister purposes.  Aboard the crippled ship, the fugitives and survivors – Morn Hyland, an ex-UMCP cop, Angus Thermopyle, a newly freed cyborg, and unwilling saboteur Ciro Vasaczk – must make a desperate gamble.  Pursued by the UMCP ship Punisher, threatened by the return of an Amnion combat vessel, they will hijack the police craft by any means necessary . . . and take it back to Earth.
